The Font

The font dated 1639 was given by Sir Richard Heigham. It consists of a marble basin, 50 cm (20 ins) in diameter, upon a white marble pedestal, which is modern, but of appropriate design. Round the rim is the following inscription, in Roman capitals,

THE GIFT OF SR RICHARD HEIGHAM KNIGHT TO THE PARISH OF EASTHAM

The metal cover is a memorial to the Rev. S.H. Reynolds, Vicar of East Ham 1871-1893, a noted writer of leading articles for 'The Times.'

The font holds the water used for baptism, the name deriving from the Latin fons meaning 'a spring of water'.
