The font dated 1639 was given by Sir Richard Heigham. It consists of a marble basin, 50 cm (20 ins) in diameter, upon a white marble pedestal, which is modern, but of appropriate design. Round the rim is the following inscription, in Roman capitals,
The metal cover is a memorial to the Rev. S.H. Reynolds, Vicar of East Ham 1871-1893, a noted writer of leading articles for 'The Times.' The font holds the water used for baptism, the name deriving from the Latin fons meaning 'a spring of water'. |
